Promising electrodeposited biocompatible coatings for steel

Our colleagues: Paulina Trzaskowska Ph.D. Eng., Katarzyna Tokarska Ph.D. Eng., prof. Elżbieta Malinowska and prof. Tomasz Ciach published results of their research in the paper entitled „Promising electrodeposited biocompatible coatings for steel obtained from polymerized microemulsions” in Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects (IF=3.131).


The paper concerns obtaining coatings on steel, in order to improve its properties in terms of contact with blood and living tissues. The solution developed by the team will contribute to improvement of properties of devices comprising steel parts which are designed for long-term contact with human organism such as stents, bone and tooth implants and similar.

The authors describe the use of microemulsions containing soy lecithin and poly(methyl methacrylate) for obtaining coatings on 316L steel with the use of a method involving flow of electrical current – electrodeposition. Obtained coatings showed resistance to prolonged washing, were repellent towards proteins and did not show toxicity when contacted with living cells. The method used by the authors is in many terms advantageous when compared to current commercially applied methods.
